AHLA Lends a Hand in New Orleans
AHLA’s Board of Directors held their mid-year meeting in New Orleans, LA, from January 13-15,
2016. It has become an AHLA tradition
for the Board and senior staff to spend the first day volunteering with a local non-profit charitable organization. This year’s volunteer project was coordinated through the Jefferson Parish Public School System, which provided AHLA with the opportunity to help with the landscaping at Riverdale High School’s Health Center. 
"AHLA is an organization that provides health care professionals of all ages and backgrounds an opportunity for learning and building long lasting relationships. One of the great benefits of membership in AHLA is the people we meet and work with in our organization. We learn from each other and it truly enriches our work and perspectives when we discuss issues and events with colleagues across the country, across disciplines, and across many different practices.
Service events are another way that
AHLA makes a difference and builds collegiality amongst its members. Last year, I attended a service event in New Orleans that was organized by the Long Term Care Program planning committee. We painted, cleaned and made a difference at a day care center in New Orleans. That gave me the idea to have our Board of Directors Midyear Board meeting in New Orleans, in January. Before we started our two days of meetings, over thirty Board members and AHLA staff rolled up their sleevesto help landscape the grounds at the Riverdale Health Clinic, a health clinic that supports a school in New Orleans that was significantly impacted by Hurricane Katrina. The AHLA team shoveled, hammered and planted, and in so doing we got to know each other a bit better as a team and were able to pay forward with
